Caitlin Moran

This woman is amazing.
She writes a column for The Times :)

This little snippet is one reason I think I love her <3

"But what I find absolutely intolerable is people who claim that she’s [Katie Price] a feminist role model — simply because she has earned a lot of money. The reasoning is this: men still have all the power and money. But men have a weak spot — sexy women. So if what it takes to become rich and powerful is to sex-up the blokes, then so be it. That’s business, baby. You might be on all fours with your arse hanging out in “glamour” calendars — but at least you’re making the rent on your enormous pink mansion. Well, there’s a phrase for that kind of behaviour. It is, to quote Jamie, the spin doctor in The Thick of It, being a “mimsy bastard quisling f***”. Women who, in a sexist world, pander to sexism to make their fortune are Vichy France with tits. Are you 32GG, waxed to within an inch of your life and faking orgasm? You’re doing business with a decadent and corrupt regime. Calling that a feminist icon is like giving an arms dealer the Nobel Peace Prize."

  1. HAHAHA! I love your point, including your previous facebook rant. Can I ask you where on earth you heard someone title Katie Price as a Feminist role model?
Considering (and I'm going by A-level Sociology and my recent degree modules, so if I'm wrong please don't be mad) most feminism(s) are deeply opposed to the "sexing up" of women, as it only objectifies women. Also Foucault is someone I've only touched on, mainly about surviellance and discipline and I thought he was good. However I don't recommend his orginal texts, as he's pretty hard going.

Yea sorry for the random comment. I was just curious about the Price thing, and guessed you were a social science student of some kind.

  2. I do a social science, yes! I'm quite pleased you noticed, ha, thank you :). I do Sociology at Warwick :)

It's interesting you mention Foucault, I've recently bought one of his books, I plan to read it when I get time...which will probably be over summer.

The Katie Price thing is something I find INCREDIBLY annoying. I find it embarrassing that we're the same sex, she's such an awful role model for anyone. She does indeed play on the whole idea of 'sex sells'. It's not just that the sexualising of women is bad, the sexualisation of everything is just not right. It's objectifying for both men and women, and makes sexualised content the norm. Which is quite depressing :(

Thanks for the comment, much appreciated!!!

  5. Wow, I know him from Naaaarfolk. Come to think of it, I think thats how I found this blog. But I would'nt know I'm very unfamiliar with the internet. :-S
Anyway yea, sorry to bother you.

  6. You haven't bothered me at all!!
Ahh the joys of Naaaarfolk. Such a small world, I won't make any sociologically related jokes about how it's a small world, as that would just be sad.

  7. HAHA!
Funny you should say that! Just last week one of my lecturers told us some sociology jokes. I was the only one in class with the courtesy to force out a small laugh for him. And so I've been labelled as a bit of a sad sack now. :-S
Having said that, I thought they were good.

  8. Ahhh, feel free to rattle some out, I'm always in the mood for some sociology jokes.
There's no issue being a sad sack if you're a COOL sad sack. Ha, how tragic.

  9. Erm ok.

How many Sociologists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Depends on what you mean by "lightbulb".

    Along with;
How many Sociologists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Depends on the context of the situation.

    So yea, what a hoot!

  10. Ahahaaa, they are brilliant.
I repeated these to my 'normal' friends and they did not understand.
THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY'RE MISSING.
    What a shame.

  11. HAHAHA Gotta love that Sociology. What stuff you studying at the mo? You doing a dissertation?

  12. I'm currently doing 4 modules, which are;
    - Gender, Culture and Popular media, by far my favourite.
    - Politics of food and nutrition, which is scarily difficult.
    - Contemporary health issues, which is basically politics.
    - statistics, surveys and secondary analysis, which is the bane of my life.
Ha. I'll be doing my dissertation next year, not sure what on though...
    How about you?

  13. Yea I'm doing a dissertation, and I have no idea what on :-S
My year ends in two weeks!! Gotta love ARU. However I am being hammered down with essays.

Wow, I hav'nt done anything on health. Most of my work ends up about crime, but I'm doing a presentation about sociology of science, GM crops are so boring. But I just wrote an essay on N. Rose, his accounts for the development of teh psychologies. Influenced by Foucault.Pretty interestinf stuff.

  14. Sociology of Science, eh? I have a feeling they wouldn't be the best of friends. Doing the food module I'm currently doing is a bit like that, I don't care about the science side, as it's not what I'm there for.

You're doing your dissertation but you don't know what on?!!?! MADNESS. How is this possible?!

Ten psychologies bit sounds quite interesting. I enjoy mixing a bit of psychology with sociology when I get the chance.

I've only done quite a bit on health because it's easy to relate to, it also covers a lot of topics, as health itself is a very fluid definition.

  15. I have it now. It's gonna be on Apocalypse Prophesies.
    Nice stuff.
Do you have any idea for yours?

    ReplyDelete
  16. That'll be soooo interesting!
I've no idea really, I did want to do it on education and the class system, but I've kind of decided against that now. I'm really not sure, I'll probably do something feminist-ish and link it to god knows what :S Ahhhh.

Haven't you almost finished uni now? Mental. I've still got over a month until exams :|

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yea, I finished on the 12th. Man its been aaages since I went on the internet. ThoughtI'd pop in and say hi :-S
I'm doing the internet now for my dissertation, not sure about it, but I'm gonna look into that, I see your into the sexualisation of stuff, judging by the this post it seems appropriate.

  18. Haaa, thanks for popping in and saying hi :) Always a pleasure.
Dissertation on the internet? What about?
Yeah, I'm excited to write all this sexualisation stuff, it's definitely something I won't get bored of reading/writing about. So that's a start :D

  19. Hmmmm, what about!?
I dont know! I've been meaning to get on with some uni reading, I HAV'NT DONE ANY!
    How goes your uni reading?

  20. Do some reading!!! I don't think motivation exists any more. It's just not anywhere.
I've managed to read 2 of the 5 books I wanted to read this summer. Hopefully I'll read another one soonish because I've got a big train journey coming up (train journeys = amazing reading time).
    Again, do some reading! :)
